Cythonized version (faster but not debuggable)

This may not be worth the shot, but I open this ticket so as to attach the corresponding exploratory PR - this PR seemed to indicate that the cythonized version was faster than pydantic (that is cythonized).

Maybe in some far future we'll like to access this material again.
