GitHub Copilot agent mode with MCP support for Eclipse is now generally available! You can enable GitHub Copilot with any GitHub account and experience the autonomous coding experience today.

Agent mode

With the introduction of agent mode in Eclipse, Copilot functions as an autonomous pair programmer that can perform multi-step coding tasks at your command, such as analyzing your codebase, proposing edits, and executing terminal commands using a defined set of tools. With agent mode, Copilot can even iterate on its own code, detect errors, and fix them automatically.

Each tool in the agent toolkit has specific capabilities that help Copilot complete these tasks. For example, Copilot can search the workspace, read file contents, execute terminal commands, retrieve compile or lint errors from the editor, and apply code changes via a speculative decoder endpoint. The set of available tools continues to grow as we experiment with new ones to further enhance the capabilities of Copilot in agent mode.

Here's what a typical workflow looks like in agent mode after you enter your request:

• Semantic understanding: Copilot interprets your request in Copilot Chat and analyzes the codebase to understand the task's intent and requirements.

• Plan proposal: Copilot leverages your code to build context around the request. Based on its understanding, it breaks the task into smaller steps and formulates a plan.

• Plan execution: Copilot asks for confirmation to take the actions outlined in the previous bullet. Some examples of actions it might take include:

  • Terminal execution: Executing terminal commands for the related tasks such as building the project and installing dependencies. (Demoed by Eclipse IDE).
    

• Task complete: After successfully implementing the changes, Copilot reviews its work, finalizes the task, and provides you with a summary of what changed.

MCP support

Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that enables AI models to interact with external tools and services through a unified interface. With Copilot supporting MCP in Eclipse, agent mode gets extended capabilities from the tools contributed by MCP servers, so Copilot can assist across more workflows and tasks.

Set up your local MCP servers

You can define your servers in a configuration file (e.g., mcp.json) by doing the following:

• In Eclipse: Click on the GitHub Copilot icon -> Edit Preferences -> find the MCP Servers section

Looks like com.microsoft.copilot.eclipse.core.completion.CompletionProvider$CompletionJob.notifyCompletionResolved() doesn't expect that ContextService.activateContext() call it does from the job will need UI thread access.

Seems that we need to wrap the calling of ContextService.activateContext() to the UI thread.

One question: I tried to reproduce it locally but not success. Is it related with specific eclipse version?

It seems that every AI interaction / code proposal is logged to the Eclipse Error log as "Info":

Logging is fine, but that pollutes application log with lot of "garbage". Ideally this would be redirected to a dedicated log file and only warnings/errors are printed to the main log file.

After investigation, this is a server-side feature despite the IDE environment. You can log out of the plugin and log back in once your quota is refreshed as a workaround. We will also try to improve the user experience in future releases. Thanks for your feedback!

I couldn't install the plugin from the Eclipse Marketplace, so I added the certificates using keytool. I used the following commands:

My issue is not that I cannot download the plugin, but that the downloaded plugin does not work.
Using the linked solution, I was able to download it by loading the certificate myself, but it does not function properly.

Please bundle per OS/architecture, currently com.microsoft.copilot.eclipse.core_0.1.0.202502101332.jar is 130 MB, the biggest parts in it being the language server binary which is embedded 4 times

   (each being around 50 MB).

The p2 tooling allows you to have architecture specific bundles.

I am using Eclipse 2024-12 (4.34.0) to develop in an SAP environment. I have installed the Copilot plugin today.

As soon as I open source code (ABAP class, RAP behaviour, Service definition, Table definition) I am getting the following error:

I've noticed that it is important that the bug appears only if the multipage editor is opened with non-text page first. If the multipage editor opened and the active tab is a text editor, everything is fine. So it seem that the copilot contribution that hooks into the editor open event miss the tab change in multipage editor.

I can understand that I don't see it if I log with an account that is on the free tier but I am logging with a paid user that should have an option of Sonnet 3.7. Copilot4Eclipse who uses your subscription does that. Is this a bug or is this by design ? Also could you tell what could be the next upgrades and when do you except them to come out ? may I suggest you add to option to create a file on the project from the answer on the chat or to apply the change on an existing file. maybe someday you will have multi files edits and creations in Eclipse

We are trying our best to launch Claude 3.7 ASAP.

Long story short, currently those newest models will launch to different IDEs progressively. Copilot4Eclipse can have it because it mimic itself as a JetBrains IDE during initialization, which is a kind of abuse of the protocol.

BTW, we are also considering some work to make all the models can be launched to all ides at the same time in the future. Which can avoid confusion like this.

When I enter prompts in Japanese, the responses are often returned in English. If I explicitly instruct it to answer in Japanese, it temporarily works, but this is not a practical solution for everyday use.

Is there any way to configure the locale so that responses are consistently generated in Japanese?
Or, do you have any plans to support Japanese output in future updates of GitHub Copilot for Eclipse?

Issue Conditions:

• JVM option: -Xverify:none (required for specific use case) AND
• Clean workspace startup (workspace deleted before startup)

Important: This issue does NOT occur when workspace already exists.

Primary Error:

Using embedded jre in eclipse: org.eclipse.justj.openjdk.hotspot.jre.full.macosx.aarch64_21.0.8.v20250724-1412/jre/lib/libjli.dylib

And add -Xverify:none to vm args, openning a entirely new workspace. The CLS just startup correctly.

I can confirm this issue and have identified the root cause. The Copilot language server
fails to start when the Chat view is not visible during Eclipse startup, regardless of
which perspective is active.

Reproduction Steps:

1. Open Eclipse with GitHub Copilot installed
2. Close the Copilot Chat view
3. Restart Eclipse
4. Result: Copilot language server fails to initialize

Root Cause:
The GitHub Copilot plugin uses lazy activation - the language server only starts when the
Chat view is displayed. If no Copilot views are visible during Eclipse startup, the
language server never gets triggered to initialize.

This appears to be a plugin architecture limitation where view-dependent services aren't
initialized until their corresponding views are displayed. The -Xverify:none flag is
still required but doesn't solve the initialization timing issue.

In Eclipse, when I request an action from Copilot in agent mode and it needs to run a Linux (WSL) command, it correctly opens a new terminal in Eclipse, executes the command properly, but the chat fails to retrieve the result of the command executed in the terminal. The chat displays "Running run_in_terminal tool" indefinitely.

Yes we have some issue regarding the run_in_terminal tool end signal. There is no related API to determine whether a command execution in terminal is done or not. So our implementation right now is a little bit hack and cannot work well in all cases. 😢

If I highlight a statement in the code I'm working on (with code added to Copilot context) and ask Copilot to explain it never explains the statement that is highlighted. It just chooses some random piece of code elsewhere in the class. I get around this by copying the statement to the chat window but my question is shouldn't Copilot be able to see which statement I'm talking about without this?
