How do I get rid of the "We are having a problem billing your account" alert without updating my payment method

I changed my banking institution and stopped my old account (I used to sponsor a repo or two from it). GitHub started showing a big red message saying:

“We are having a problem billing your account. Please update your payment method or call your payment provider for details on why the transaction failed.
You can contact support with any questions.”

However, I am happy with no longer sponsoring any repositories and not having my new payment information in GitHub. I simply want to get rid of the red banner. I was unable to delete my old payment method completely, as there's only an Edit option and all the fields are required.

GitHub has been showing me this message for over a month and I simply want it to go away.

(I also included our canned reply below) Others here may have encountered similar challenges though so I'd be curious to see if another person has a solution. I still see this message. I canceled my Copilot account and, like m93a, can't delete my payment method. I've tried logging out and back in, and logging in from a different browser, to no effect. Clicking the "contact support" link in the message takes me to an FAQ search box, which is less than intuitive. I'm replying here so I can link from the support ticket.

I filed a support ticket and got the following reply:

Hi Michal,

Thanks for writing in, and sorry for the trouble here. It looks like this account was locked due to some recent failed sponsorship payment attempts, and this has since been canceled.

I've just made some adjustments to get that sorted that on our end, so it should be working now.

And indeed, I don't see the banner anymore!

For everyone encountered the same issue, go ahead to open a support ticket! This is the most fast, straightforward method to solve this. My support ticket is replied within several hours and they said my account was locked and helped getting my account unlocked immediately. I don't know how long the locking would last if I hadn't open that support ticket.

Dear GitHub Team, please fix this issue.
That banner is so annoying, and I'm even unable to access the free trial.

Denying me access to free trial because my credit card is empty for now, might force me to use other AI programming alternatives.

I just want to know how GitHub Copilot feels like, if I find it great, I will do a subscription.

But now you are denying me free month access, yet am seeing that it will expire soon.

Same issue here, and my CI actions started failing, I wanted to try Copilot's Claude 3.7, so I added my debit card (mercado pago, Argentina), it says its invalid, even tho it is a valid card and I can use it just fine for youtube.

This is a very annoying issue, and makes me nervous because $10 is a lot to pay for an Argentinian high-schooler.

It was a mistake to want to try copilot. Its disabled the actions at https://github.com/xplshn/dbin-metadata, which are ESSENTIAL to keep https://github.com/xplshn/dbin working!

For everyone's information:
I made contact to support and asked about it. My timeline was that I had a premium account I didn't need anymore. My payment method was paypal, but I couldn't remove it. When I asked support to remove it, they did, but something was maybe not right because from then on I started getting emails about my payment not being able to be processed (no payments needed to be processed) and the banner at the top on github, plus copilot wasn't working even though my premium copilot account was still active until August. When I contacted them, they fixed it doing something under the hood, in less than 12 hours to behonest.
So if you're getting this issue, I'd recommend reaching out to support and they will help you gladly and promptly.
