Summary of Changes

Hello @nejidevelops, I'm Gemini Code Assist1! I'm currently reviewing this pull request and will post my feedback shortly. In the meantime, here's a summary to help you and other reviewers quickly get up to speed!

This pull request performs an automated upgrade of the jimp image processing library to its latest recommended version. The main purpose of this update is to enhance the project's security posture by resolving several known vulnerabilities present in the older version of jimp and its underlying dependencies. This ensures the application benefits from the latest security patches and improvements in image handling.

Highlights

  • Major Dependency Upgrade: The primary change in this pull request is the significant upgrade of the jimp image processing library from version 0.6.4 to 0.22.12.
  • Security Vulnerability Fixes: This upgrade directly addresses multiple security vulnerabilities identified by Snyk, including high-severity Denial of Service (DoS) issues and several medium- and low-severity Prototype Pollution vulnerabilities, along with an Exposure of Sensitive Information to an Unauthorized Actor vulnerability.
  • Extensive Dependency Tree Refresh: The jimp upgrade necessitated updates to a large number of its transitive dependencies, leading to a comprehensive refresh of the project's dependency tree. This includes the introduction of new packages and the removal of several deprecated ones.

Code Review

This pull request upgrades jimp from version 0.6.4 to 0.22.12 to resolve security vulnerabilities. While this is an important security update, this is a significant major version upgrade and introduces breaking changes that will cause the application to fail at runtime.

Critical Issue: Breaking API change in jimp

The code in course-04/exercises/lesson-4/solution/src/lambda/s3/resizeImage.ts uses a jimp API that has been changed in the new version.

Specifically, line 39:

const convertedBuffer = await image.getBufferAsync(Jimp.AUTO)

The use of Jimp.AUTO in getBufferAsync is no longer supported as it was in version 0.6.4. In [email protected], this method expects a MIME type string. Since the output file is being saved as a JPEG (${key}.jpeg), this line must be updated to provide the correct MIME type.

Suggested Fix:

To resolve this, please update the code in resizeImage.ts as follows:

const convertedBuffer = await image.getBufferAsync(Jimp.MIME_JPEG);

Without this change, the resizeImage lambda will fail.

On a positive note, this upgrade also cleans up the package-lock.json by pointing dependencies to the public npm registry instead of a private nexus repository, which improves maintainability.
