looks like an optimizer bug. num_tones is used several times inside this function and should not vanish

<optimized out> means it's either stored in a register whose lifetime does not extend to the crash location or rolled into some other computation. It does not by itself indicate an optimizer bug.

what i have tried:

• crash using gcc 10 and 9 in default build

• no crash in Debug build!

• crashline: histogram.c 291 dt_free_align(partial_binned);

You can always try to build with -O0 to see if it's possible to read the variables.
By the way, which commit is your head?
I checked out f9d2231 and on row 219 there is only a blank row.
