I know this is an oldie but I ran into this exact problem on a legacy EE2 install & was able to leverage this bit of code. Only problem is that it's missing the closing brace on the _restoreTags fn, in addition to the part that actually modifies the string after doing the tags closed/unclosed regex magic.
