AI: Anthropic: Enhanced Claude integration options

Current Situation

ZED currently supports Claude integration exclusively through the Anthropic API, which requires a separate API key and operates on different payment tiers than standard Claude subscriptions.

Proposed Enhancement

I would like to request two integration options to improve accessibility and user experience:

Option 1: Direct Claude Subscription Integration

• Allow users to authenticate with their existing Claude Pro ($20/month) or Max ($100/month) subscriptions.
• Similar to how Claude Code currently handles authentication
• This would eliminate the need for separate API billing and provide a more seamless experience for existing Claude subscribers

Option 2: Claude Code Integration

• Add support for Claude Code integration via the right dock panel
• This would leverage the existing Claude Code authentication system that allows user to authenticate through regular subscription tiers
• Users could access Claude functionality directly within ZED while maintaining their preferred billing structure

Benefits

• Cost Efficiency: Users wouldn't need separate API subscriptions on top of existing Claude plans
• Simplified Billing: Single subscription model aligned with user's current Claude tier
• Improved UX: Seamless integration matching the Claude Code experience
• Broader Accessibility: Lower barrier to entry for Claude Pro/Max subscribers

Many developers already subscribe to Claude Pro or Max for general use and would benefit from accessing this same subscription tier within their ZED workflow, rather than managing separate API costs and limits.

Hi folks, this is now live in open beta on both preview and stable. We also open sourced the ACP adapter we build to communicate between Claude Code and ACP, which you can find in a new repo.
