I'm not a vibe coder, I only need Edit Predictions

I’ve noticed that many current plans—like those from Windsurf, Cursor, and Zed bundle edit predictions (Tab) and prompts into a single plan, usually around $20/month (give or take). These plans often include access to about 500 prompts or requests a month.

But as someone who’s not big on having AI write full code for me, I find that I rarely use all those prompts. What I really care about is the edit predictions/Tab feature the real-time inline suggestions while coding. That’s the part I use constantly.

I was one of Zed’s early users and had to switch temporarily because Cursor offered the Tab feature, but now I’m back on Zed again. I’m currently subscribed to both Windsurf and Cursor (just testing their Tab experience), but I consistently have 350+ unused prompts left every month which don’t roll over and just go to waste.

Are there any plans in the works for a lighter, Tab-only subscription? Maybe something like $5/month, with optional usage-based pricing for prompts something closer to how GitHub Copilot or Supermaven used to be.

I feel like the current offerings are emphasizing the wrong part of AI-assisted coding. For many of us, smart editing is more valuable than auto-generating full files.

After writing, modifying, and deleting over 700,000 lines of code in the last 18 months, I put the above into perspective.

Just to add to the pricing table, Trae have released their pro offering:

Highlights are 600 prompts (compared to Zed’s 500) for $10 (compared to Zed’s $20).

I like Zed far better as an editor, but Trae’s pricing is hard to ignore.

I would love tiered pricing: edit predictions only, small number of prompts (eg 300), large number of prompts (eg 600), and then usage based pricing beyond.

I’m not sure what makes business sense, but I’d be happy to pay something like $5/$10/$20 for such tiers. I’m happy to pay more for Zed than Trae since it’s a better editor, but I’d feel better to at least getting similar usage limits in return, and having a lower priced option in case I don't need that many prompts.

They have such a less feature set, they want to monetize on the mark up of prompts. And its crazy, 500 sounds decent, until you realize, you aren't using any..

15 days in I only used 100 prompts, and most of them were rejected... and they dont get rolled over to the next month... remaining prompts => 🚽 ,

Don't they get enterprise account for serving, meaning at the end of the day these editors pay for what we use to AI LLM providers, but we pay for full. Not justifying.

Either the predictions need to get way better or we need a tab only subscription. Currently as a normal coder the ai subscription is not attractive.

GitHub Copilot be set as edit provider. Works great, also offers a nice set of LLM's.
I'm not sure what a normal coder is, but for those on a payroll it is cheaper than Netflix.

Realise it is crazy expensive to offer AI as a service. I bet Zed is burning money, even on the paid subscribers.

normal coder is someone that is not a vibe coder. A person that uses AI as an assistant, rather than an agent. Things like autocomplete, quick cursor relocation to the next possible edit, etc.

It's about assistant versus agent. The thing is, GitHub Copilot is a cheap solution. I know that and I've used it, but it is not as good as Cursor or Windsurf's tab features—the multi-line edits or jumping to the next thing that the user wants to edit.

it's not about the cost, that I am trying to emphasize. It's about justifying it. I am currently using Claude max plan, and also Chatgpt Plus, *edit also gemini pro for some programming needs, and they are justifying the money spent on them, unlike these editors, trying to sell, something that I am not going to use completely.
