It generates a hash for each item, then compares them. If hashes match within a threshold, it groups them all together.
The reason it is not "x-1" is the imperfect matching. There could be false positives and negatives.

I have tried to figure this out however my 20k+ photos are a mess due to some unintended duplicate uploads and update/creation date f**k ups.
My question is that when it finds duplicates does it put all of them in the album or all but one? ie if I deleted all the photos in the dupe album am I left with one copy or do I lose all of them?
I'm assuming it puts all of them in and I go through the album and delete X-1 of the duplicates but it would be quicker if it was X-1 ( for me with so many ).
Related question is whether the size of the image counts towards the duplicate - many years ago I had a phone that took the same photo at three resolutions simulatanously. They're all in my Google account. They look the same until you inspect the resolution. Would they appear as duplicates?
