Alright, translations!

First of all I have my database set to Swedish. Some of the strings are not translated (same as the Danish thread linked above). I tried change my own /model/labels.txt but still get the old translation in the UI even next day.

1. Where should I change the labels to get my translations to show up and how can I help so that the project itself gets updated to the missing translations?

2. If the logic is latin_translated in the labels files the Swedish untranslated strings have the UK/US translations. Is there anyway to pinpoint them in the labels files to quickly find and translate all the species with wrong name?

And finally @mcguirepr89 do you need help with a Swedish translation? If so I could use the file you shared in the Danish thread linked above forjoknjokn.txt and have a go :)

When I first became involved with BirdNET-Pi I didnt know my git from my bash (still dont really)

My work with Patrick has been to

• try anything new that comes out & report back to originator (generally Patrick to date)

• teach myself Python

• if I want something, hack it together in python till it seems to work for me, give to Patrick to test, integrate & release into the wild if useful and hope it works for all.

This approach seems to get well received in this community.

I have taken a closer look at the issue with missed Swedish species names. This is probably because different Latin names are sometimes used in the Swedish standard compared with BirdNET and then some species have not been translated. I have updated the list of the wrong Swedish species I found and ask Patrick to update. If we find more errors, these can be corrected later.

Mistranslated species that already exist in the local database can easily be changed to the correct name and to avoid future errors, you also update to the correct name in labels.txt or just update that file with the content of the attached file if you are swedish.

When it comes to translation into the national language for BirdNET-Pi, I have a semi-automatic routine almost complete and will return shortly.

The dutch translation is almost done, but there's one bird that's in my garden often that has its name not translated yet.
Its the Eurasian Jackdaw, which is called "Kauw" in dutch. Can't seem to find an easy way to edit this (locally or, preferably on github)

The way to do it is to unpack the ./models/labels_I18n.zip. Modify the dutch file and repack it all again. Some Zip programs allow "in-archive" edits which helps 😄 7-Zip for example enables you to open a file inside the archive, make changes to it and save it - then upon closing the file 7-Zip asks if you want to modify the archived file - to which you reply yes.

However I agree that it would be beneficial to be able to edit labels, directly from the web-interface.

You should be able to edit the labels.txt from the web interface by going to "Tools" > "File Manager," then locating the labels.txt file that you are currently using (so, this is assuming you've already selected your language in "Tools" > "Settings"), you can edit the entries right from there.

The location of your currently used labels.txt file is always the file symlinked from ~/BirdNET-Pi/model/labels.txt to the ~/BirdNET-Pi/scripts directory. So, just edit ~/BirdNET-Pi/scripts/labels.txt which should always be in your language, then "Tools" > "Services" > "Restart ALL Services"

If you have trouble with saving your changes to the labels.txt file in "File Manager," run this in the "Tools" > "Web Terminal":

sudo -E chown -R $USER:$USER ~/Bird*
sudo -E chmod -R g+wr ~/Bird*

and try again -- that ought to fix it.

Hi, The Portuguese names in labels_pt.txt has a general error that add a "e" as a 2º character no matter the original name is - e.g. : Jacu-estalo becomes Jeacu-estalo. and Uirapuru becomes Ueirapuru. so I corrected all PT names in this file
labels_pt_corrected.txt. please feel free to distribute it or use it in the next update
I don't know where to place it in my birdnet-pi - could you please tell me in which directory it should be placed

Also you should put this file (renamed to labels.txt) in ~/BirdNET-Pi/model/, where ~/ means your home directory.

I got the last version - looks like it was updated kind of 4 days ago
so I think it's part of model 6K

When it comes to translation into the national language for BirdNET-Pi, I have a semi-automatic routine almost complete and will return shortly.

I've written a short full-automated (per language) "translator" based on the english labels provided in "labels_en.txt"
It is written in python and uses the API from eBird.org. Basically, you search for a species using its latin name, and eBird provides the national translated name.

Here are the german labels_de.txt for the new model (~97.7% translated, ~1.5% not found):

Hi, not sure i'm in the right place, i have translated some remaining english strings in label_fr.txt.
Source file is in ./models/labels_I18n.zip downloaded from git yesterday.

The translation works fine for me locally, maybe you can include it in next release.
