I created an empty directory and ran:

$ go install github.com/magefile/mage@latest
$ mage -init
$ mage
magefile.go:11:2: no required module provides package github.com/magefile/mage/mg: go.mod file not found in current directory or any parent directory; see 'go help modules'
Error: error compiling magefiles

go 1.24.0
popos 22.04

It's obvious what the issue is based on the error but I don't think the docs make it obvious that you

1. need a go.mod
2. need to install any utility pkgs in go.mod
