How to use recurring tasks?

Can someone please explain to me how the recurring tasks actually work?

Here is an example:
I have created the project “Birthdays”, in which I have put all birthdays as recurring tasks which should reappear after exactly one year.

Now I have noticed that when I mark a birthday as completed, it moves it to the archive instead of leaving it in the project and just moving the time one year into the future.

How can I deal with this?

Thank you for sharing this, the recurring tasks still need some improvement!

Therefore, @johannesjo created a Repeat/Recurring Task Improvement Collection (#4931).
Here all concerns and suggestions about recurring tasks will be collected there, what makes it easier for the implementation.
