Alternative way to remove masks

This is something I personally need. Whenever I use the masking feature, I always use the backspace key as a shortcut to remove the new mask. I've already learned to remove it with the right mouse button, but I'd like to modify the code to find another way to remove the mask using the backspace key.
I'd like to open a pull request for this, but I think it's safer to discuss this issue first.
I'm new to open source contributions and would like to know which files I should research to achieve this goal?
