Are containers supposed to be separate instances or just a replacement for multiple windows?

I was trying to use containerized tabs, and I assigned one container to personal, another to shopping, and ran a test signing in on gmail. My gmail login carried across the containers, and I was always logged into the same account on both. Is this the intended function, or is there a way to get these containers to be more like separate instances?
